We participate in an intergenerational dialogue about “Science for Democracy: the Role of Knowledge in the Congress for Deputies” in the Foro de Foros space.

On 6 February, in the framework of the Learning Conversations of Foro de Foros, an intergenerational dialogue was held on ‘Science for Democracy: The role of knowledge in the Congress of Deputies’. The event highlighted the importance of scientific knowledge in the legislative process and its role in parliamentary work in the lower house.

The event was moderated by Verónica Fuentes, science journalist at SINC, and was attended by several members of Team C: Ana Elorza (director of Strategic Projects at FECYT and coordinator of Oficina C), Cristina Fernández García (Communication Officer at the Spanish Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology), Pedro Peña (clerk at the Spanish Parliament and coordinator of Oficina C) and José Luis Roscales (Scientific Evidence Officer at the Spanish Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology).

This conversation explored how scientific knowledge is an essential but not the only dimension of parliamentary work. The importance of intermediaries connecting the scientific and political spheres was underlined. These honest brokers are responsible for assessing the quality of interdisciplinary information and synthesising it in clear and rigorous language.

They also reflected on the limits of evidence and the need to communicate the disagreements, consensus and uncertainties inherent in a constantly evolving science.

This meeting is part of the strategy of the Foro de Foros space to provide knowledge to civil society and serve as a bridge for intergenerational dialogue.
